The Future Of North America

North America consists of three big states, Mexico, the United States and Canada, as well as a multitude of small states in Central America. Population reached more than 500 million euros. English, Spanish and French are the major languages, not counting the Indian dialects. In comparison, the European Union (EU) 27 countries from 2008 has a total population in the vicinity of 500 million euros. GDP per capita is also similar, $ 25,000 for North America and 26,000 for the EU

There isHowever, a major difference between these two strong regions, while Europe has shown that it is possible to a supranational, without having to create the local cultures, and nationalist sentiments, Canada, the United States and Mexico for their cooperation in NAFTA (North America limited Free Trade Agreement), despite recent criticism of presidential candidate has the contract to benefit the three countries by increasing trade and job creation. There remains the question: "Is it likely that weseeing an alliance like the EU in North America in the next 10 years? .

The idea has surfaced recently to introduce a single currency, the dollar, for all NAFTA countries. It is a fact that you can travel anywhere in Mexico and Canada without ever having to exchange your dollars for pesos or Canadian dollars local. So what keeps changing it? Just a word, Mexico. Nationalism surfaces in the land of the Aztecs, where a foreign national symbols, such as language proposed change currencyand / or Pemex (the nationalized oil company). While moderate politicians to try to strengthen Mexico's relations with Washington, is located in the far left of the PRD (Party of Democratic Revolution) led public demonstrations organized in a podium in the states and Congress makes a great burden on himself. As a result, the relations between the two countries lie between glacial and warm.

The biggest thorn in our relations is without doubt illegal immigration. There is no simple solutionexcept, perhaps, opening the border completely for people and goods poor Mexicans will continue to seek a better life in the United States and to American immigration authorities will continue some of them back to their homeland. There is an endless and frustrating game of human ping-pong, that will cost millions of dollars and thousands of deaths. Building a wall along the border is obviously not a solution to the crisis, it will only make us look ridiculous in the eyes of the world.

It isimportant to understand again to historical roots, the innate distrust of all things on the American part of the Mexicans. Our southern neighbor has lost half its territory to the extremely unfair Treaty of Guadalupe in the 19th Century. Imposed a heavy-handed United States always has his way to Latin America, beginning with the Declaration of Manifest Destiny and the numerous military interventions over the years. Latin America was a "backyard" of the United States and known toCuba had only recently able to power our massive challenge.

To the first question regarding a possible alliance between supra-Canada, the United States and Mexico answer requires good knowledge of history and a deep understanding of the undercurrents of nationalist forces in the respective countries. The extreme right in the U.S., Mexico rejects as unworthy of a political partner, the extreme left in Mexico rejects a possible alliance with the U.S. as an imperialist subjugation to aPower. Republicans speak of a nation through corruption and the Mexican politicians "bought" under siege by drug cartels. Mexican intelligence accuses Washington of not doing enough against the American drug dealer, so that the main task of the Mexican military.

An American Union in sight? Not in the next 10 years, not in the next 20 years. It would be a political earthquake in the two countries, Mexico and the U.S. (Canada demand that is integrated into the American political sphere). It would also need for Mexico to equal the American and Canadian levels of prosperity among ordinary people, a factor that would automatically resolve the immigration problem. In the meantime, Washington would do well to pay more attention to Latin America and less on other parts of the world. The result would certainly be worth the effort.
